Lampeter to Llanllyr

Distance: 11 km

Grade: moderate, mainly side roads and good paths.

Transport links: Lampeter has buses to Cardiff (via Carmarthen) and Aberystwyth. Llanllyr is just off the route between Lampeter and Aberystwyth: buses stop in Temple Bar and Felinfach.

See http://www.traveline.cymru for details.

Leave Lampeter by walking west along the High Street. You are now on the Ceredigion County Council’s new waymarked Aeron Valley path — for details go to https://www.ceredigion.gov.uk/index.cfm?articleid=12137 and scroll down (the path is described in reverse, from Aberaeron to Lampeter).

At SN 57523 48169 turn right towards the church along Bryn yr Eglwys. Walk through the churchyard to the west gate at SN 57521 48399. Follow the lane round the backs of a housing estate to SN 57308 48609 and across two fields. At SN 57221 48799 turn right on a track along the edge of the trees.

At SN 57266 48949 cross the main road and take the track slightly to the left up into the trees. At SN 57353 49119 bear left following an old boundary under the trees. At SN 57296 49229 turn left at the T junction and into the woods. Bear round to the right with the track until you meet a metalled road at SN 57426 49721. Turn left. Go straight across the crossroads. At SN 57358 50664 turn left on a bridleway at the beginning of the trees. Follow the track through the trees and across the fields. (This bypasses Silian. The church has some interesting early medieval carved stones — see Howard Williams' blog for details. You may decide to stay on the road and walk through the village.)

At SN 56666 51349 turn right on the metalled road. At SN 56856 51289 turn left on a side road. In about 0.5 km at SN 57093 51654 a waymarked footpath goes left and straight across the field.

Continue on the same line along the edge of several fields. The footpath is well stiled and waymarked. Cross a patch of rough ground from SN 56511 52039 to SN 56246 52286 then bear right across the next two fields. At SN 56161 52721, just past the lakes, go over a stile in the fence to your right and up towards the trees. At SN 56196 52839 bear left to join a stony track. Turn left on the track then right at SN 56031 53119 when you meet the metalled road.

Follow the road for just over 1 km. At SN 56366 53709 take the green lane to your left. When the lane ends at SN 55611 54314, go through the gate to your right and walk down the hedge to your left to Llanerch farm and the road. Here the Aeron Valley Way makes a complicated diversion round Talsarn, but it is simpler to walk down the side road for a mile and turn right on the B4337. Llanllyr House is on your left.
