Valle Crucis to Llangollen

Leving the abbey, turn right and walk through the caravan park to a footbridge over the Eglwyseg River.

Climb the steep steps up through the trees and turn right.

At SJ 20581 44114 the track divides. Take the left fork and walk down past Pentrefelin Farm. At SJ 20808 43602 turn right on the A539 and left almost immediately to cross the canal. At SJ 20716 43592, turn left on to the canal towpath for the 2-mile walk to Llangollen. To your right the River Dee tumbles over a series of rapids, and the restored steam railway runs between the canal and the river.

Just before the Llangollen Wharf, bear right on a tarmac path which curves down to join the main road into Llangollen. Turn left, then right to cross the bridge over the Dee. Llangollen has reasonably good bus links to Wrexham and Ruabon (both with train stations) and in the other direction rather less frequent buses to Corwen, Bala, Dolgellau and Barmouth.

At Llangollen the Cistercian Way recrosses the Offa’s Dyke Path. You can follow the OD Path up to explore Castell Dinas Bran. However, you are now getting near to one of the sections of the Path which runs along the actual monument, and we are anxious to avoid this if possible.

For a level route you could also follow  the canal towpath over the famous Pontcysyllte aqueduct (a World Heritage Site), but that takes you a long way east. The Cistercian Way continues over the old trackways to the south to link up with the Ceiriog Way.
