The Montgomeryshire hills

Strata Marcella to Llanfair Caereinion

Go back to the canal and follow the towpath into Welshpool.

Walk up the main street past the shops and the petrol station, towards the Welshpool and Llanfair Caereinion Light Railway station. You can use the railway to get to Llanfair or walk. The path has not been checked since 2005 and there may have been improvements (or deterioration) - if you try this section, use the blog to let us know how you get on.

For the way we walked in 2005, just before the Raven Bridge, turn left past some cottages. The side road becomes a green lane. Cross a stile and walk along the river bank. After the fourth stile bear up to the left. You are now in Powys Castle Park. Turn right on the stony track from the castle grounds and walk down to the gate.Turn left on the metalled road. When the road divides tale the left fork (waymarked as a footpath). The track goes through the farmyard at Talyrnau between the house and sheds then bears left to the stile at the far left corner of the field. Walk along the edge of the forest, bypass Upper Talyrnau to the left.

Bear up to the left to cross the next field. Cross the stony track and keep straight on to the gate at the far corner of the trees. Bear left of the stony track and walk up to cross the farm drive. The footpath has been diverted to the right of the farm. Cross the drive by the stiles and bear right across the next field then turn right on a track beyond the fam. Follow the track along the hedge to your left through three gates then bear right across the field to the next stile. Over the stile, bear left across the next field, cross a stile and footbridge, bear left along the little stream and over another stile. Walk along the hedge and go over a stile at the far left corner of the field. Cross the field, go over a stile at the far right corner and turn right on a metalled road into Castle Caereinion.

Castle Caereinion has a shop and a pub (evenings only at present). Walk through the village, take the road to the left signposted Dolywenol and immediately turn right up Henrhyd Lane. The lane becomes a stony track over the hills and into woodland. When you come out of the trees, go through a gate to your right, bear left across the next field and through the gate in the far hedge. Follow the fence to yourleft through some old gateposts and down into the woods to cross a stream.

From this point you should be able to cut straight across the Llanllugan but we have not (yet) checked all the footpaths and you may have to do a lot of road walking. Cross the stream and walk up the far bank then bear elft up the slope to a gate in the angle of the dogleg in the far hedge. Continue on the same diagonal line across the next field. Go through the gate in the far hedge and walk along the hedge to your left (do not go sharp left and down the track to Pantybriallu Farm). Through the next gate bear left to join the stony track from the farm to the metalled road. Turn right on the road. You may be able to find footpaths to cut across the minor roads to the south. The road from Pantybriallu crosses the B4389. About a mile further on you rejoin the route from Llanfair Caereinion.

To continue from Castle Caereinion to Llanfair Caereinion, cross the stream, turn right and follow a line of trees up to the next gate. Here the path becomes a stony track and eventually a very minor road. Turn left on the B4385 aand walk downhill to cross a stream and up the other side. After about ½ mile, go through the gate to your right (currently waymarked with yellow tape). Go straight across the field to a gate in the middle of the far hedge then up to go through the gates to the right of Rhosfawr Farm.

Past the farm, bear left across the field past the top of a line of trees on a little stream and through a gate to the right just beyond the trees. . Bear left to walk between two patches of woodland. Cross the stile, walk straight across the next field to a gate in the far hedge. Bear left across the next field to a gate in the middle of the far hedge. Cross the road and walk down a metalled lane to Upper Bryn-Elen Farm.

The lane becomes a footpath through the farm yard, above and to the left of the farm house. Walk along the hedge to your left and through the gate at the far left corner of the field. Bear right across the next field - there should be a stile in the middle of the far hedge but you will probably need to go through the gate towards the far right corner. Walk along the hedge to your left, go through the gate to the left and walk along the other wide of the hedge through a small tree plantation to a stile at the top right corner of the field.

Cross a stony path, go through a gate and over a footbridge. Bear left then right to go through the garden of Clyniarth. Take the gate out of the garden, go over a stile marked with yellow tape and straight across the next field. (From this point the path has been deliberately blocked in several places but the fences are marked with yellow tape and you can scramble over. The markings suggest that there may be plans to reopen the path.)

Make your way over a heavily overgrown fence at the point where it has been marked with yellow tape. Go straight across the next field to a gap in the hedge. Cross a stony track, go over the barbed wire (again marked with yellow tape) and continue on the same line across the next field. The next obstacle is two fences (both marked with yellow tape) either side of a stream. Walk up the fence to your left, go through the gate at the top left corner of the field, bear right across the angle of the field and join a stony track. This takes you below the buildings of Gelli-gason Farm, becomes a green lane and eventually a minor metalled road.

You can follow this road down to the B4385 and turn right for Llanfair Caereinion. When you reach the first houses it is possible to cut off the angle. Turn off at the metalled lane to the right then immediately take a (heavily overgrown) footpath to your right. This will take you round the fields to join the B4385 a little further down.
