Maendy Camp

Iron Age settlement on the ridge above Ton Pentre

The Rhondda from Maendy Camp

Grid reference on route: SS 95795 95446

The history of the Valleys doesn't begin with the Industrial Revolution. There are Bronze Age burial munds scattered along the ridges, and even a few Iron Age fortified settlements. This one, on the ridge above Ton Pentre, was probably home to a group of pastoral farmers. There is a small innner enclosure, then widely spaced outer banks which could have sheltered plenty of animals.
