The hills above Port Talbot have been farmed since at least the Bronze Age and the town of Aberafan was founded by the Normans. Port Talbot grew in the nineteenth century as a dock and railway centre. The industrial estate had one of Europe's biggest steelworks. The town has plenty of shops and places to eat and stay.
