Llantarnam – Penrhys – Margam and back along the coast path would make a good fortnight’s holiday. Just over 200 km if you follow the coast path all the way but you can cut off some of the corners.
A little bit further: continue on the Cistercian Way to Neath, walk back up the canals to Tonna, across the aqueduct and up through the forest to join the line of Sarn Helen, the old Roman road. You can follow this to the National Park Visitor Centre then walk along lanes and side roads to Brecon. From here, take the Usk Valley Walk or the canal towpath (often the same thing) back to Llantarnam. 210 km with a lot of interest on the way.
For something a bit shorter: Caerleon – Llantarnam – Risca – Mynydd Machen, pick up the Sirhowy Valley Walk into Newport and follow the Usk Valley Walk back to Caerleon. About 42 km.
Even shorter: start on the canal towpath near Llantarnam at ST 29133 93473, up to Llandderfel, along the track to ST 25473 94141, down the lane to Henllys, minor roads to Llantarnam’s grange farm at Pentre-bach, back along the canal towpath. 15 km.
Start at Llanwynno, down to Pontygwaith and up to Penrhys, down the ridge to Porth, across the Rhondda to Ynys-hir and up the lane to Llanwynno. 13 km.
