Llantarnam to Risca

Distance: 15 km

Grade: moderate to severe, mainly good paths, some steep climbs

Transport links: regular bus services to Llantarnam from Newport and Cwmbran. Cwmbran is on the Cardiff-Manchester railway line. Regular bus services to Risca from Newport and Blackwood. Llantarnam Abbey is now the home of the Sisters of St Joseph of Annecy. There is no public right of way to the house, though the nuns welcome genuine visitors. The medieval pilgrimage route from Llantarnam towards Penrhys went along main roads into what is now Old Cwmbran. To explore this route, click on the link to the right. At ST 30958 92501, on the footpath over Lodge Hill, turn left on the minor road from Ponthir. Walk across the bridge over the dual carriageway. Cross the main road, walk a little way down Pentre Lane and turn right at the Three Blackbirds Inn. Walk along Ty Coch Lane.

At ST 29595 93368 (T junction) turn left along Llantarnam Park Way. Go straight over the roundabout and walk along Hollybush Way until you reach the canal.

At ST 29136 93464 turn right and walk along the towpath to Old Cwmbran.

At ST 29243 94845 turn left along Commercial Street, walk past the shops and St Gabriel’s Church and keep straight on over the hill.

At ST 28112 95333 (roundabout by Greenmeadow Farm) take the bollarded lane straight ahead of you. Bear left up the steps and cross Ty Gwyn Way by the footbridge at ST 27694 95518. The path goes right then left and winds up through the houses.

 

 

At ST 27629 95683 cross Hafren Road and continue along the lane.

At ST 27267 95881 cross Hafren Road for the second time and take the lane ahead of you.

At ST 27161 95970 cross Graig Road and follow the lane up to another metalled road.

At ST 27104 96340 turn sharp left and follow the footpath past Llandderfel Farm and up to the top of the ridge.

At ST 24436 92786 go through the gate, walk up to the mound at Twmbarlwm then continue along the ridge past the trig point and down to Pegwn-y-bwlch.

At ST 23782 92882 turn left and follow the footpath down through the forest

At ST 23723 92632 turn right on the forest road then left again immediately and continue down the track to join the Darren road. Follow this to the canal.

At ST 23433 91580 cross the bridge and turn right along the towpath.

At ST 23039 91702 follow the waymarked footpath down to the left, across the railway line and through the side streets of Risca to cross the main road.
